Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Advertising in business directories

Do directories drive traffic to your website?

Many businesses are lured into spending a significant part of their marketing budget on directory listings by over enthusiastic directory companies trying to sell them advertising space. The fact is that internet users find over 80% of websites through search and are 5 times more likely to use search to locate a product or service than by trawling through a directory.

Most users find websites directly from Google

This is common sense. Search is a far more immediate and direct tool rather than visiting a directory, having to learn how their site search works, and then browsing through tens of results without a clear indication of which company is going to provide the best service.

How can I tell if a directory is effective?

Check whether individual business profiles in the directory are well ranked in the search engines. This will depend on the quality of content in the directory and whether it is therefore ‘sticky’ enough to attract and retain users.
