Replacing paper tickets with smartcards on London’s busy transport network system is one of the world’s biggest ticketing initiatives. A staggering 6,000 buses, 255 Underground stations, 28 National Rail stations and 2,300 local ticket outlets have been fitted with new smartcard equipment.
A significant aspect of the challenge was to encourage tube users to take up the Oyster card and to explain the practicalities of where to get one, how to use it, and how to recharge it. And to communicate all this simply to the diverse population of London, including tube users for whom English was not their native language.
This project drew on John’s expertise not only as a website architect, but also on his skills in simplifying user instructions.
Now that the roll out of Oystercard is complete, Transport for London have integrated the information into their website, though the basic approach to explaining the card remains the same:
