designed and made by Heidi Lichterman, Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen
Illustrated above is an example of a handwoven scarf designed and made by Heidi Lichterman. This example is Ikat dyed handwoven silk twill with pheasant feathers.
Heidi Lichterman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, and is internationally acclaimed for her striking wall hangings, which have been commissioned for public buildings worldwide. She is also a leading exponent of the Ikat process, which involves tie-dyeing the yarn before it goes on the loom where it is woven together with a single colour to make it into cloth.
Each scarf is a unique piece of wearable art
For her silk scarves and shawls, Heidi chooses colours which are appropriate to the weight of the finished fabric. The colours are strong in their relationships: soft colours that slide gently one into the next beside a sharp, hard-edged houndstooth black-and-white stripe or a bold contrasting stripe, then with a very narrow stripe zinging through the gentle colours. The colours range from gentle pastels to strong blacks with vibrant accent colours. Each scarf is a unique piece of wearable art.
