“I’m really overworked but I just can’t trust anyone to share my work”

Does that sound anything like you? Do you feel under pressure at work and yet unable to delegate some of the jobs and tasks to others? Is this because you feel your staff lack the knowledge, know-how or reliability to do the work? You are not alone. Overwork and the stress this leads to is a serious problem not just for individuals, but also for their employers. Stress-related illness is one of the major causes of absenteeism. It is all too easy to feel snowed under:

Delegation is not

  • Skiving off work
  • Dumping responsibility on to others
  • Ducking your own responsibilities
  • Tricking people into doing your work

In other words, delegation is not about shirking your responsibilities. It is about sharing responsibilities.

Do I need to delegate?

Look at the checklist below. If two or more of the statements is true for you, chances are that you really need to delegate more effectively.. And if you are not confident about delegating tasks to others, read on.

Do you need to delegate? Think about these statements. Do any apply to you?

  • I often feel overworked
  • I often have to take home with me at the end of the day or at weekends
  • Subordinates are always coming to me with problems that I feel they should really be able to deal with themselves
  • If I do delegate work to others, I’m always worrying if it’s going to be done properly
  • I sometimes spend a long time checking and correcting tasks that I’ve delegated to others

Red Hot Tips – the best way to delegate tasks to your subordinate

  • Make sure that your subordinate knows what the end result of the task should be
  • Be clear about the level of initiative you expect and how little, or often, you expect the person to report back to you
  • Have some method of assessing the results of the task
  • Make sure that you “sell” the benefits of delegating the tasks
  • Once a task is delegated, don’t keep interfering (it can be very tempting to keep sticking your oar in - don’t: keep it well out of the river)
  • Delegate to the next level down - down skip - it will create a lot of bad feeling
