Big Garden Birdwatch

The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is held every year at the end of January. It provides a great opportunity for anyone to get hands on experience of nature conservation. Last January, nearly 400,000 people spent an hour watching their local birds, collectively recording over 6 million birds in more than 200,000 gardens.

If you are a teacher, work with children, or are involved in a children's group, you may be interested to find out more about the Big Schools' Birdwatch. This is a fun way of supplementing the school curriculum and involves the kids counting birds for one hour in schools.

Facts about bird boxes

Recent research at Bristol University has shown that as birds see colours in the same way that bees do – with 4 cones, as opposed to the 3 in the human eye, their response to colour is greater than ours.
