Children’s party games
Assault Course
Having three boys means that birthday parties in my house tend to be noisy, active and full of excitement, so what better way to deal with all that excess energy than hosting an “assault course” party.
It’s a great afternoon’s fun and is easily arranged. I used a combination of outdoor play equipment and stuff I found lying around to make the “assault” course. Each boy / girl completes the course against the clock.
I gave a small prize to each competitor and a larger prize for the overall winner. The kids really loved this party game.
To make the “assault “ course I used a toddler slide and a larger slide, a child’s trampoline and a play tunnel, a sand pit and a paddling pool ( filled with lukewarm, coloured water). To this I added a wooden plank set up on concrete blocks and stepping stones. These performed a double function, children had to weave in and out of them on the ground as well as conventional stepping stones.
Pass The Parcel
This party game needs no explanation but parents should:
- Make sure you’ve got more than enough layers on the parcel so that each child can get to rip off a layer.
- Make it more fun by hiding little party presents within the layers.
- Make sure an adult is controlling the music.
Pin The Tail on The Donkey
- For younger children use blue tack rather than a drawing pin
- If using drawing pins, make sure the children are supervised at all times.
- Use black cloth for the blindfold.
Treasure Hunt
- Gear the clues to the age group. For example very young children might like picture clues, whereas older children may like riddles.
- Make sure the treasure hunt follows a clearly planned route, so that children have to find and solve each clue in the proper sequence
- Be around to help with extra clues and hints
- Make sure the treasure is something everyone can share and enjoy
The treasure hunt party game is perfect for a pirate party and if there are boys and girls a pirate and princess party. There is loads of great party prizes available, including gold coins, gem rings and bracelets. The “treasure” can be hidden in buckets filled with sand.
Musical Chairs
- If children are very small, or if you don’t think you have enough space, use
- Cushions instead of chairs.
- Make sure an adult is controlling the party music.
- Give everyone a couple of turns before eliminating people.
- Don’t make it drag on too long or the losers will get bored.
General Party Planning
The party games outlined above are just a few of the options that are available and with a little thought and planning your child’s birthday party can be a real success.
- If you are playing party games make sure every child wins at least once.
- Have treats and party prizes along the way as well as at the end of the game.
- Ask some parents or family to stay and help with supervising the children
- If there are too many for one person to handle. A good rule of thumb is no
- More than six children to one adult.
- Have fun , fun and more fun, your children will think you are a star.
