What a chef does
Chefs are responsible for ensuring that food is prepared to consistently high standards, within the time and budget required by the restaurant manager. The role normally involves:
- Directing the style and method of food preparation
- Creating interesting new dishes that will suit the tastes of the target clientele, and be able to be delivered on time and budget
- Planning the menu for everyday dining and special functions with the restaurant manager
- Managing and motivating the assistant chefs and other catering staff
- Ensuring standards of health and safety, and kitchen hygeine are met and maintained.
What type of person the role suits
To be an effective chef, you will need to have:
- Experience of creating stylish food to order in a fast paced environment
- Great leadership skills to direct and motivate a busy kitchen staff
- An ability to source and select quality fresh ingredients
- An eye for presentation and style to ensure the food is appealing on the plate
- Experience and skill at writing budgets, controlling costs and improving efficiency.
