John Waddington: consultancy career

John has been at the forefront of simplifying information for over 20 years. Clients have been drawn by his ability to simplify the online experience in a way that maximises consumer response, and he has advised a wide range of international corporations and government departments.

He was one of the original members of the Baddeley Associates team of information designers, profiled in Newsweek in 1985 for their role in the Cambridge Phenomenon.

In 1986, John moved to another pioneering company - Siegel & Gale, acting as Senior Consultant in their UK office at a time when the team was leading the world in making laser printed statements and bills more user friendly.

After six years with Siegel & Gale, John founded his own consultancy which developed a niche in usable form design and one-to-one marketing communications. John Waddington Associates carried out strategic projects for BT, the BBC, Nokia, and Prudential, ranging from interface design to simplifying pension reviews.

In the late 1990s, John recognised the exciting opportunities to improve the user experience of online information, and in 2000 he joined the interactive arm of Publicis Group as Head of Information Architecture. Here, he was responsible for planning a number of high profile sites, including the launch of the Euro, New Deal, and the Oystercard.

In 2003, John left Publicis to pursue his freelance career, and has since carried out successful projects for the Cabinet Office, Eurotunnel, the British Army, the Chip and PIN programme and International SOS.
