Cambridge has been recognised as Europe’s centre of excellence in design relating to technology since the early 1980s. Famous Cambridge companies at the heart of the information revolution have included Acorn, ARM, CAD Centre, Laser Scan, and more recently Microsoft and WorldPay.
Cambridge became a pioneering centre for information design
Alongside the pioneers of modern home computing in Cambridge there was another revolution starting to take hold in the early 1980s: the emergence of information design. John Waddington was one of a small group of pioneers who recognised that to make PCs and computer software accessible to non technical people required a user-centred approach to designing guides and screen interfaces.
John Waddington’s role in the information design revolution
John started his information design career at Baddeley Associates, followed by an appointment as Senior Consultant at Cambridge Communication on the Cambridge Science Park. Since 1992, his own design consultancy, John Waddington Associates has earned a strong reputation for information design, usability, and information architecture, and its client portfolio includes the BBC, ITN, the Cabinet Office, Renault, and the European Central Bank.
